I Love You Jesus

Two thousand years ago God chose to perform a selfless act of love on our behalf.  He sent his holy and perfect son Jesus to become a man and go through all the stages of life from infancy to childhood to adulthood.  He was misunderstood and maligned, worshipped and spat upon.  Some insisted He destroy the enemies of His people Israel but He had come to destroy the true enemy of all mankind…sin.

He learned to appreciate His life on earth and was not excited about the painful task He had been born to; asking His father if possible, to change His destiny.  Nonetheless He was willing to fulfill his purpose and did so without a single murmur or complaint.

Tomorrow we in America celebrate this wonderful and precious gift from God.  One hundred years ago we celebrated as a nation with a majority of hearts touched by this simple yet vital gift.  Today we are a strong minority under attack for our faith.

I am thankful for my Savior.  I know the true reason for this season of God.  Those in the world say there is no need for God any more.  They say that when teens and young adults go into schools and kill their fellow students, there is no need.  They say that when a father climbs fifty stories and throws his three year old son and then himself off the building there is no need.  They say when someone murders the precious life within them to avoid parenthood, there is no need.  They say when the confused and wounded end their own lives with a pill or a gun, there is no need.  They absolutely say that when a man and woman marry it is okay but if two men or two women marry it is somehow a higher relationship and you may not speak against it.  They say God’s gift of love is only valid if there are no rules and no requirements.  According to my God they call evil good and good evil and there is no need for the child born in a manger.

I love the child in the manger, the precocious youth speaking before the chief priests and especially the grown adult who hung upon a tree for me.  I love the sacrifice and the sorrow He and His loved ones endured that I might be saved from God’s judgment.  Tomorrow I will celebrate His life as I have often celebrated His death and resurrection.  If I sing of a town in Bethlehem or a Silent Night, if I celebrate the coming of the faithful I will bear in mind the little child who bore the ancient soul.  I will celebrate the grace of a grieving father for His wayward children and I too will believe in the only begotten Son of God.

I love you Jesus.  Happy Birthday.  Tomorrow and every day thereafter I ask you to come to my house and knock on my door.  I open my door to you and ask you to enter.  My live is yours and my future as well.  Have a great Birthday.

Grace XI - You Too Can Act A Fool

Fearless Grace

Acts 20:24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

Paul was looking ahead to a life of bondage and even death yet he saw it with joy and not sorrow.  Who are YOU?  Have you asked yourself that question?  Are you a child of God, first, last and always?  I had been a member of Faith Temple for twenty years and one day late at night I found myself wandering around the halls in the dark.  I was alone in the church waiting for a printing job to finish for a funeral the next day.  It must have been around 11 pm or so and my family was all at home in bed.

There is a time in your life where you take stock of where you are and who you are and think, “Will I be satisfied if this becomes my legacy?”  I wasn’t satisfied where I was professionally but I was satisfied with where I was headed.  It occurred to me…that night…that this was my life.  I lived to help bring life to all who traveled down these halls and entered the sanctuary beside me.  I lived to help them understand their God and rejoice in His touch and move upon their lives.

I may become a millionaire or never have a dollar in the bank but I will have a legacy of a word offered here or a hug there and someone being encouraged in the Lord.  On the day I stand before the Lord and He plays my life back I don’t want to hear Him ask me why I didn’t press more into the work.  I certainly do not want to hear that I missed the best of what might have been because I chose to put my own fears or my own desires first.  It is much better to press in until His desires BECOME your desires and His boldness becomes your boldness.

Acts 20:31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

People do not always give God their best.  They live lives of slipping and sliding until God has to do something drastic to reel them in.  I’d like to say that has never been one of my faults but it would be a lie.  As a High School student I would read one page of comics and then do one math problem.  As an adult I would read one chapter of scripture and then one chapter of a sci-fi novel.  Those days are largely over but I must still keep watch over my will and keep it in check and focused on the prize.

I have warned more than a few who ignored my concerns and paid a terrible price for it.  Some children were lost because the parents could not place the good of the children over their own lusts.  Marriages were dissolved because couples did not heed warnings given early on about their actions.  Money was lost when prophetic warnings were given because the people chose not to believe.  All these things happened to someone I had previously warned or ministered to and this is multiplied over and over in the churches of the world today.

Leaders and elders in the church have a responsibility to cry aloud and spare not (Isaiah 58:1-2).  As individuals we cannot do it alone but if we train up our children in the way they should go and gradually release them to minister to others as they grow then our lessons will be reinforced from all directions.  This is another reason why I consider it to be important to spend as much time as possible fellowshipping in the church.

People in the world try to mock home schooling families and call them isolationists. Perhaps they are.  Scripture says, “Come out from among them and be ye separate (2 Corinthians 6:17-18).”  It also says if you touch the unclean thing God will not receive you but if you keep yourself separate and holy you will be His sons and daughters and He will be a father to you.  Peer pressure is a terrible thing.  Because the world calls evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20, 3 John 1:11), they will pressure you to agree with their blasphemous ideals.  I don’t know if peer pressure is an American trait or one that affects all mankind but I suspect it is universal.

I have read some vicious and absolutely deplorable comments from men AND women who are so deeply offended by the Christian lifestyle that they have become beside themselves with rage and anger.  The circumstances that led to these words could be as simple as a family having a large number of children and raising them in Christian schools or homeschooling or choosing to forego birth control.  I don’t agree that all forms of birth control are a sin (though abortion and the morning after drug certainly are), but if I feel convicted about any of them it is no one person’s business but my own.

The world has made a woman’s womb the altar upon which they sacrifice to the god of convenience.  Anyone who seeks to stop this murdering of children is publicly branded an enemy of the State.  That a woman’s womb was created by God to produce life and not primarily as an amusement park for any man who happens by is considered irrelevant.  We in the body of Christ must learn to hold fast to God’s Word rather than our own opinions.  Our opinions CAN be wrong; His Word cannot.

Acts 20:32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

Remember Paul’s second letter to Corinth?  He stated that if we come out from among them and live separated lives we will be His sons and daughters.  You can’t inherit if you are not family.  Only those lawfully adopted by God through Christ have the qualifications to be adopted.  There is no other way to obtain this adoption (1 Corinthians 3:11).  Your inheritance will not find you if you live comfortably with the world.  Your inheritance will locate you only when you live among those who are sanctified in Christ.  God said, “Be ye holy for I the Lord am holy (Leviticus 11:44, 45, 19:2, 20:26, 21:8, 1 Peter 1:16).”  I believe He meant it.

Covering Grace

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3-- Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

Romans 5:20 says that where sin abounds the grace of God abounds in even greater abundance.  This caused some jaded souls to agree with Romans 6:1 but Paul said, “No.”  There is never any excuse to knowingly commit sin when you know that Christ died for you.  He expects you to press in powerfully with your full will and strength and live a life of holiness and sanctification (Mark 12:29-31).  We are to be dead to sin.  Baptism is unto death; it symbolizes drowning so when John baptized his disciples it was death to the old actions; it was for repentance.

When Jesus has us get baptized now it is so we can be partakers of his death while we yet live.  Think of that.  Jesus died for our sins and when we are baptized we lay our sins at His feet and He takes them up.  When we rise out of the water it symbolizes our rising into the newness of life and hope in Christ Jesus.  What an awesome and wonderful thing.  Old things have passed away, behold all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17).  Have you ever had someone remind you of the evil you once did prior to coming to Christ?  Feel free to tell that person that the individual they are thinking of died.  You are someone else.

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

The newness of life…  Old things are passed away, BEHOLD all things are made new.  God wants you to notice, recognize and always bear in your mind that you have been saved to walk in newness of life.  Old things are supposed to have PASSED AWAY.  If we continue to walk in the old ways then we are unlikely to be successful at killing the sins of our past.

It is a requirement to live in newness of life.  If it is new then it is something we have not done before.  Some people say, “I have been saved all my life.”  God is so amazing, so filled with wonder, so awe inspiring, that you can live before Him for centuries and not even scratch the surface of understanding Him.  The longer you live, the deeper your understanding of God, the greater your opportunities to learn.  Learning more of God makes you a better student so you can learn more of God.  It is a perfect and unbroken circle.

Thousands of years ago lives were hundreds of years long.  Now it is seventy or eighty on average.  In spite of this we have mistaken scientific leaps for knowledge and flawed theories for wisdom.  No matter the length of life you live, it will always be fuller and more beneficial to you if it is lived by the nurture and admonition of God.  For all their bragging and lofty tones, scientists can never be more noble and more virtuous than when they are seekers of truth rather than trying to prove pet theories.  God promises to give revelation to seekers and blindness to the self deceived.

Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

I’m not addicted, I can quit at any time.  Today I was reading about the famous actors who have spent time in jail over the years.  The vast majority of them were arrested on drug and alcohol charges.  Not one of them would have been arrested if they had been living a godly life.  People do not commit crimes because they are poor.  People commit crimes because they are spiritually dead and corrupt.

Law enforcement personnel tried to find some reason to blame the accident that killed Paul Walker and his friend on something other than speeding or behaving foolishly.  The car was especially susceptible to accidents at high speed.  That is true.  The smooth speed dots on the ‘parking lot’ upset the cars stability.  True again.  The driver was going 70 miles over the parking lot speed limit.  Shhhh.  Just whisper that one.

We hate to take responsibility for our actions when they bite us on the rear end.  That is human nature.  Doing the right thing at the right time because God said so…that’s His nature.  God said in 1 Peter 3:17 that it is better to suffer or be chastened for doing the right thing.  A man lost his job for rushing out of the store he worked at to put out a fire in someone’s car.  In 4 ½ years of work there was only one minor transgression in his job record.  He made $9.50 an hour working there which is very little in this country.

The store has rules and those rules were upheld.  In today’s world there is very little room for grace and mercy.  The point is, there are times when you will do the correct moral thing and still suffer for it.  Jesus did and we are not greater than Jesus.  We simply need to make sure we do not do the wrong thing and suffer for that.  God watches over all His children to perform His will.  Make sure you are not chastened because your actions go against that will.

Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

Do you ever get tired of being gracious and polite?  No?  Do you ever get tired of anger and frustration building up in you when others treat you badly?  Yes?  Well, whatever you might have to deal with personally, God expects us to walk in that newness of life as instruments of righteousness and grace.  We’re the ones who don’t cheat on our taxes and don’t steal the phone or jewelry that someone foolishly left out or left behind.  We go out of our way to find the true owners and return their property to them.  Honestly, I think those things are the easiest to accomplish.

I was at the airport the other day and as I stepped out of my car I discovered a brand new iPhone on the ground by the curb.  There was a brief moment of “Oooooo, pretty,” as I examined the shiny new device before my spirit asked my flesh, “Oooooo what?”  My flesh wisely said, “Nothing,” and sulked back to his shrinking corner.  The phone was locked and I had no way of discovering the owner’s name that way so I called AT&T to ask if they could somehow tell me the owners’ name.  Long story short…no.

I finally got through security and made it to my gate and saw a gate agent.  I asked her to make an announcement that a phone had been discovered and a few minutes later an elderly lady rushed up to the gate out of breath.  She was able to unlock the phone proving it was hers and waved as she gratefully rushed back to her flight.

Things like that are easy.  I have burned a few dollars worth of fuel to return excess change I received at the gas station.  Why?  Because as much as I could have used that extra $20, I need God’s hand on my life much more.  I was much more strident (loud and bragging) about my upright walk when I was younger but there is still one thing that I choose to have define my life…integrity.  Between that and truth they are like two bookends of my life story.  Integrity makes you do the right thing and truth will MAKE you free.  Both make it easier for God’s grace to come through for you.

As I said though, they are the easy part of this life…for me.  I struggle with aggravation, frustration and anger over people who go out of their way to make my life difficult.  About the only thing that makes it easier to be gracious and kind when people around you are deliberately being rude and shady toward you is the Jesus example.  There have been a few events in my life that have kept me awake nights grinding my teeth over the injustice of it all.

My son Joseph was injured and as much as it blessed us to receive a settlement to care for him, there was one thing that would have made a world of difference to me.  An apology for the lack of care he received.  I really don’t want to hear about all the reasons a company or government can’t apologize because of being held responsible; but when you know you are responsible and have to pay anyway, why not?

That has stayed with me for almost 24 years now.  There have been a few other events that are right up there but my reason for bringing it up was how I learned to deal with it.  How do you deal with your own flaws?  When you offend someone in a big way and no amount of self delusion can make it their fault, how do you deal with your own stupidity or mistakes?  I’ve learned to be quick to apologize when I make mistakes because no matter how many I make, Jesus forgives me.  For all my many flaws He loves me.  In spite of falling short more times than I have met the mark, He died for me.

There is one other reason I have learned to be gracious when others around me are nipping at my heels and making me feel like a failure.  Jesus loves them and forgives them as much as He loves me and forgives me.  That is what does it for me; to recognize that Jesus has a life changing level of forgiveness that paid my debt to Hell and had enough change left over to finance my entire life afterwards.  Knowing that, what right do I have to gnash my teeth over a bit of disrespect or rudeness from immature and sin trapped people?  None.

The law gave us an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.  If I had to give up a body part for every time I missed God over the years I would have run out of parts.  I am thankful and filled with wonder over the grace and redeeming love that flows from Jesus to each and every one of us.  I am not bold enough to dare to continue in my anger or rage when I consider that simple but powerful truth.  With a healthy dose of that understanding I can apologize with total humility, even when I know the other party is at fault.

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

This is a wonderful spiritual law.  Sin has no dominion over those who have accepted Christ as savior.  That is not to say that you will not be tested or tried by sin; only that sin will not have the ability to force you to act against God.  His grace is sufficient to keep you faultless before God until your renewed mind catches up with your calling.

A scripture came to mind today that fit with public attacks against someone on television who made a bold statement about homosexuality.  Those who accept homosexuality as a valid lifestyle (whether they are in it or not), were absolutely tearing into Christianity for our nerve to believe in a God larger than ourselves.  The scripture that came to mind is Proverbs 9:8 which says, “Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.”  Time and time again I saw children of God trying to help a scorner understand why God’s way is right and time and time again I saw the evil and vitriol spewed by the scorner.

You cannot reach those God is not drawing.  He stands at the door and knocks but you still have to open the door and allow Him into your life.  If it wasn’t so sad it would almost be funny watching the blind to all things of God speaking with man’s wisdom and see their ignorance displayed before all the world.  It is sad because the world hears their words and is in agreement with them.  They are part of sin’s dominion and do not see that they are under its spell.

I’m going to stop here for now.  I want to offer you an important thought to consider.  You can absolutely say and do the right thing where angels in Heaven are rejoicing and your fellow Christians laud you as a spiritual hero; and then you can say something so stupid to seemingly wipe out all the good you did in your first statement.  I have first hand experience in this.  If you are not gracious to beloved brethren when they fall short then God will not be gracious to you when you fall short.

Scripture says that whatever measure you use to judge someone, you will be measured exactly the same (Matthew 7:2).  It also says if you forgive someone for missing the mark, you too will be forgiven.  Remember, while under the anointing our words and deeds are perfect but as soon as the anointing lifts and we take our minds off of God we are flawed as any man and only your level of spiritual training will direct your actions.

I heard the man who commented on the Bible’s stance on homosexuality and got trashed by the Media make a statement that was somewhat thoughtless (or not wise) about race.  Whenever you do something wonderful for Jesus the Devil will pull out all his tricks to make you stumble in word or deed.  Be watchful and vigilant but most of all, remember to be gracious because YOU can be EQUALLY thoughtless and stupid given the proper circumstances.  Really, you can.  I know this from experience.

Grace X - Be All That You Can Be Church

Freeing Grace

Acts 15:7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

There is always someone who wants rules, rules and more rules.  I was reading an article today about actual laws on the books in California.  In one town it’s against the law to spit on the sidewalk.  You are not allowed to detonate a nuclear device within the city limits.  I suppose it’s okay to detonate it just outside of town since there is no law against it.  This is just two of the laws that someone actually took the time to write and pass.  One law says it is against the law for a vehicle without a driver to travel at more than 60 miles per hour.  I had better be careful how steep a hill I park on.  Hate to break that law.

The Jews have 613 basic laws.  These are the specific laws contained in the Torah as given to Moses by God.  They have added thousands of additional laws over the years to clarify and define the parameters of the original laws. We humans seem to feel much better when we can codify people’s lives to death with many rules and laws.

In Acts 15 we have just such a situation.  Several Jewish leaders had decided that Gentiles must obey Moses’ law in order to be saved.  They traveled from Jerusalem to where Paul and Barnabas were to tell them their opinions.  Paul and Barnabas thought their idea was a bunch of rubbish so all of them chose to travel to Jerusalem and discuss it with the senior apostles of the new Christian sect.  Verse 7 above brings us to the meeting where Peter once again speaks with great eloquence under the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 15:8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; 9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

His first point was that if God, who knows every heart, has revealed His love for the Gentiles by anointing them with His Holy Spirit, and has done so to uncircumcised Gentiles who have never sacrificed a single animal for their sins.  His question was, why should people who have already received the Holy Spirit, who already spoke with other tongues, be forced to obey the daily bondage of the laws of Moses?  As Peter said, they had been saved by faith and not the works of the law so why insist on the very works that their act of faith made unnecessary?

Acts 15:10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

The Pharisees used to disparage the common men and women of their villages for their lack of adherence to the laws of Moses.  That said, they had to admit that they only followed those same laws perfectly by devoting every moment of every day to them.  This option was not available to anyone who had to work hard to make a living.  What if your job was to collect dead bodies as an ancient coroner?  You were ceremonially unclean every day until evening.  The same held true if you tanned leather or did any other job that might place you in contact with death, blood or disease.

Paul stated that he had indeed managed to live blamelessly (Philippians 3:6) and yet that very effort had been a waste of time.  Peter had no such grand claims to make.  He admitted that he had never been able to obey every law of God.  According to James 2:10 he was guilty of missing the entire law of God.

Acts 15:11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

I love how he explains in verse 11 that if the Jews accept the grace of Jesus that they might live up to the holiness found in gentiles.  That had to hurt.  Making a statement that a gentile in communion with Christ is holier than a Jew fully following the law of Moses would have cut any Jew to the quick.  In spite of all their failures, they WERE more holy than the sinners around them.  All this changed when Christ came and His Grace became the ONLY possible path to salvation (Acts 4:12).  He became the true Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29-36).

I saw a program yesterday that described the death of Jesus as a homicide.  They acted as investigators and tried to discover who was guilty of killing Jesus.  Personally I found their premise silly since the death of Christ was not a crime but an achievement, but they did indeed put forth a lot of effort to figure it all out.  The suspects in the case were, Caiaphas, Pilate, Judas and even Jesus Himself.

It was discovered that Caiaphas had the most motive and desperately wanted Jesus dead, but he lacked the means.  He was not allowed to put anyone to death under Roman law.  Pilate had all the means in the world but he did not want to put Jesus to death and only did so because of the crowds and his fear of starting a rebellion over one man.  Judas was guilty of treachery but his actions did not really cause the death of Jesus.

The only one who really drove this situation to its ultimate conclusion was Jesus.  He rode a donkey into town as the Messiah (Zechariah 9:9, Matthew 21:5).  This scared the religious leaders terribly.  He drove the money changers out of the temple where the High Priest had allowed them to congregate (John 2:15).  In doing so he declared Himself to be higher than the High Priest and even declared God to be His father (John 2:16).  He also attacked the finances of the CHIEF PRIESTS (a made up and non-God-given title) and caused harm to their wallets.

The crime Caiaphas wanted to kill him for was claiming to be the Son of God (Luke 22:66-71, John 8:56-59).  Pilate cared nothing for that charge.  Caiaphas tried to say Jesus called Himself King of the Jews which would make Him a threat to the Romans.  He told Pilate that He was not a king in THIS world.  As much as the Jewish priests wanted him out of the way, several thought it possible He might be the Messiah and others feared the common people.  Caiaphas pressed that it was better for one man to die for the people and unwittingly prophesied the true reason for Christ’s coming (John 11:47-52).

As High Priest Caiaphas still possessed the spiritual gifts of his profession and used them without understanding.  Peter’s statement was an indictment against them for their lack of faith in following Jesus.  He was saying that if the gentiles in their innocent ignorance could accept and profit from this wonderful free gift then the Jews in their pride and arrogance might even hear the call to choose Christ and live.

Continuing Grace

Acts 15:37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark. 38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

Following the meeting of Apostles and elders in the previous verses, a determination was made about the gentile converts.  Since the vast majority of Christians are non-Hebrew gentiles it is worth a brief examination of the standards God placed upon gentiles via the disciples.  Bear in mind that God Himself put His word in their mouths.  They did not speak their own minds, in fact as Jews their mind would have been calling for more rules.  It is evident that God had vastly trimmed the rules placed upon the new Christians.

The final list contained only four prohibitions:
1.    Eat no food offered to idols.  This is not because idols have any power, but because people THINK they do and therefore eating food offered to idols might cause someone to stumble.
2.    Do not eat blood products or drink blood.  This one is extremely important.  God said, “Life is in the blood (Leviticus 17:11).”  Man has often felt that you are what you eat.  They would drink the blood of their enemies or of powerful animals to somehow obtain their strength.  Even today, hunters often drink the blood of their first kill.  This is a form of pagan worship and God does not allow it.  Several cultures have developed food that use blood as a main ingredient.  This is against God’s prohibitions. You would be amazed how many foods today are made using the drained blood of cattle and other animals.
3.    Do not eat food that has been strangled.  This rule was a Jewish one from the beginning.  There were proper ways to kill an animal.  The knife must be extremely sharp and the throat cut to cause no unnecessary suffering.  The animal is to be hung and the blood poured out onto the ground so it could not be used for food.
4.    The fourth and final rule is that we abstain from fornication.  Why?  Because we are supposed to be faithful to our God.  People who worship many gods are considered adulterous by God.  We are to worship only our one true God and by example have intercourse only with the husband or wife we are married to.

You would not think these four simple rules would be so hard to follow but you would be wrong.  Most of us today don’t even know where our food comes from so in that respect we ought to eat our meals with thanksgiving (1 Corinthians 10:25-28).  In other parts of the world a man might kill your food right in front of your eyes.  His faith may cause him to say a prayer to the spirit of the beast as he slays it.  Perhaps he will save the blood for later use.  We are to avoid these things if possible and ignore them with thanksgiving if not.

It is obvious that if you heard of a particular slaughter house that tortured their animals prior to killing them you ought to go elsewhere for your food.  The final prohibition causes me the most grief because it appears to be the one we not only ignore but laugh at in this country.  We have allowed college professors and psychologists to tell us that sex is merely a recreational behavior that can ultimately cause pregnancy and possibly disease if not done carefully.  According to God this attitude and teaching is a LIE.

There is no such thing as ‘safe sex’ outside of marriage.  A man who is married to more than one woman has at least made a vow to each of them to love and respect them as wives.  There is no such vow or commitment to unmarried couples.  God considers each of these lawless unions to be no better than being joined to a prostitute.  In His mind you are an infidel who is unfaithful to Him and the one you have sex with.  The fact that you are drawn to that person; the fact that a homosexual is drawn to another of the same sex, is of no importance to God.  He expects you to maintain your affections within the boundaries HE has established.

The truth is that your affections WILL come into subjection to His will if you allow them no other outlet.  We human beings are subjective creatures and no matter how we might be bent or broken into perverse affections, we can be healed and brought into proper alignment to His will if we press in that direction and that direction only.

Once these four prohibitions had been established and agreed upon they chose to send the Apostles back out to spread the word.  There was some contention in this area because John Mark had gotten scared earlier and left Paul and Barnabas.  Paul did not want someone with him that might not remain faithful to the work.  Barnabas was more tender hearted and wanted to work with John Mark and build him up in his faith.  One must consider that Paul was a Pharisee and still had times when he felt frustrated by the immature saints.  His response was not particularly gracious in this case.  Note however that God did not allow his ministry to suffer for it.  He simply worked on Paul’s heart over a period of time.

Acts 15:39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus; 40 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

This contention appeared to be a biting and damaging one but it did have the effect of splitting two powerful witnesses, Paul and Barnabas, into separate teams where they might reach even more souls.  In that respect it almost appeared to be heaven sent.  Perhaps it was.  Not all contentions and divisions are of the devil.  God said our gifts and even the administration of those gifts (how they work) are different for every single Christian.  Our God is not bound by specific administrations of His gifts.  He loves diversity.  Diversity that goes against His Word however is sin so do not get the idea that Christ makes all actions okay.

I love that the brethren allowed the men to work out their differences and once decisions were made, sent them off in the GRACE of God.  Did God want them to break from each other in anger?  No.  Did God take that split and use it for the good of the kingdom?  Absolutely.  God does not waste any actions that can be used for the good of the kingdom.  He continues to work on our weaknesses, expands our strengths and remains focused on His plan of salvation.

Acts 15:41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.

Men can argue and disagree without losing respect for one another.  This is frequently missed by those who examine relationships.  You can respect someone’s abilities and life choices and still disagree with their methods.  You can even love their methods and hate their life choices.  The point is, God blesses us when we come to Him.  He gives us gifts according to HIS purpose and those gifts operate according to HIS plan.  I have the gift of tongues and interpretation of tongues.  Those two gifts equal prophecy but I have had prophets tell me I could simply prophesy and not do it in two steps.  The truth is, we have the gifts we are given and must operate in them.

If you listen to everyone who tells you how to use your gift it can make it difficult to discover and become proficient in your gift.  Our gifts are unique to the individual saint.  They MUST line up with God’s Word, but in operation they are as unique as we are.  As a minister I have observed any number of gifts and am able to help young saints learn about their gifts and operate in them more effectively, but I may not experience them in the exact same manner.  This is the glory of God and the miracle of God that He causes all things to work together for Good and for God.

I have had several ministers tell me to “Fear Not” and it’s good advice.  Can their words remove fear from my life?  No.  Then what good is their advice?  It shows me the direction God is taking me and when their advice is given with specific scriptures (as all prophetic words should be), it gives me a foundation to build upon.  Eventually, their words, His words and a life of faith will overcome all my doubts and on that day I will find myself exactly where I need to be.

Perhaps I am a John Mark and take longer to grow than a Paul (who has had decades to grow as a Pharisee under the greatest teachers).  I know many outgoing, gregarious people who simply click with others and are able to build a ministry quickly and I know many who are shy or nervous about some things.  In my own case I know the gifts are there and understand how they operate.  I love God’s Word and enjoy studying it and teaching it.  Unlike the natural Evangelists in our midst I find it difficult to approach people I do not know.

That fact has hampered me in many ways but it does not hamper who or what I am in the pulpit or in my office.  Churches should not become personality cults where a prophet begets only prophets or an evangelist begets only evangelists.  As a pastor I personally need a church with evangelists in it.  I need prophets, teachers and the entire cornucopia of ministry gifts so my weaknesses will always be addressed and my strengths can be utilized.

A Pastor may not have the organizational skills of an administrator and if he or she does not have those skills they need to find an administrator who does.  An evangelist may not be a great counselor or a prophet a great leader of men, but their gifts are indispensible when needed.  A pastor once told me that prophets are messy (and it is true to a point), but we need prophets.  They require training and the only true school for ministry in the bible is the school of the prophets.

They MUST learn to differentiate between God’s Words and their own thoughts.  In the beginning they will make mistakes and the waters will be muddy.  Some preachers fail to provide proper training because it CAN appear the person lacks prophetic gifts.  A non-prophetic preacher cannot train a prophet.  Prophets beget prophets because only prophets can discern the prophetic.  Pastors train pastors and evangelists train evangelists.  Prophetic pastors can train prophets and evangelistic pastors can train evangelists but all of us NEED the rest of the five fold gifts.  We will never EXCEL without them.

Believing Grace

Acts 18:25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

This man, a Jew named Apollos, knew the Hebrew scriptures backwards and forwards and had been particularly touched by John the Baptist’s ministry.  He was a powerful orator and spoke in the synagogues often.  John’s baptism of repentance struck a chord in his life.  He was not so nationalistic that he could not see the need for repentance.  In many ways he was like Paul in that he knew the Word of God well, but he was open minded and more open to the Spirit of God.

Acts 18:26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

When everyone around you is screaming, “CONQUEST!!!” and you hear, “repent” it can be quite uncomfortable.  I had a friend years ago who used to party with her co-workers.  One day she came to God and He touched her life.  She began to study scripture at every free moment.  Her co-workers who would have a party during office hours began to be angry with her because she would read her Bible as they partied. They tried to have her fired for studying during office hours.  Hypocrites.  Even the Jews ought to have known God wouldn’t bless them in their sin.

Apollos preached boldly to repent and when Aquila and Priscilla began to reveal the true Messiah to him it changed his entire life.  His repentant heart could well understand the need for a redeeming savior before the need of a conquering king.  He fully and completely embraced his new Lord and once that missing piece of his life’s puzzle was in place there was no holding him back. Apollos charged ahead to do the work of God.

Acts 18:27 And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: 28 For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

Verse 27 says they believed through grace.  Scripture says, “By grace, through faith, ye are saved.”  When you go forth and preach the Word of God, our Lord empowers your words and brings forth living fruit.  People repent and embrace the lifestyle.  This is a time filled with danger.  If Satan can come at this time and steal the words from your heart he will.  Many have no strength in themselves and fall immediately after conversion (Mark 4:17, Luke 8:13).

One reason churches fail to grow is that they fail to become a true community.  We castigate parents for failing to have meals together as a family so parents can keep abreast of what is happening in their children’s lives but we turn around and have only one service a week or at most two, and wonder why people’s spiritual lives suffer.  Churches should be open as often as possible during the week so spiritual children can come and be ministered to and their lives be spoken into at all times.

Churches that have become clubs full of entertainment are a waste of time because there is no spiritual component to build them in their most holy faith.  Churches that ONLY offer spiritual food and care nothing for the school, home and every day life of their members are not a community or a real family.  As a pastor, if I do not see you more than once a week, I can’t possibly know what is going on in your life.  Many people won’t call me for a counseling session or an appointment to speak but they might come to church during the week in the hopes of ‘running into’ the pastor.

I consider myself truly blessed to come from a church that was open during the week days and often in the evenings.  Because we had always been there for the tweens and teens, they were comfortable meeting together as young adults.  As they matured they realized there were things they wanted to do for the Lord and began to meet on their own as mature saints with the pastor’s permission.  Instead of flogging the sheep to get some involvement, the sheep felt they were involved because they had become part of a community.

There is a show on television about a family called the Duggars.  They have 18 or 19 kids and their family is practically a church unto itself.  Neither parent yells at the kids and they homeschool and train them daily.  Boys and girls learn how to cook, shop and fix the family cars and they all learn business techniques.  My point is, every church should in some ways model their family.

Pastors are parents and since our congregations are not required to be there we shouldn’t be screaming angry preachers.  Our home (church) life should be organized, disciplined, well behaved and filled with love.  Children should be as comfortable there as they are at home (and hopefully well behaved at both places).  Most the time as a parent I got to sleep comfortably all night, but occasionally one of my children would wake me and say, “Dad, I don’t feel good.”  These things happen in a church as well.  Pastors have answered a call to parent and raise their spiritual children.  You can’t do this from the pulpit one day a week.

If you have never experienced a loving and caring home life you may not make the best pastor.  If you find yourself unable to speak comfortably to strangers or initiate the conversations you may not be the best evangelist.  If you cannot present the word of God in an orderly and comprehensive manner you may not be the best teacher.  Whatever your gifts, callings and skills, you must discover them and determine how they operate in YOUR life.

Learn how to live from your pastor.  Make sure you have a pastor who knows how to live.  Learn how to evangelize from your evangelist.  Learn how to teach by studying under a great teacher.  One day God will take all you have learned and place you where you can give all that information and training back to God’s people.

Never stop growing beloved.  Don’t be offended when someone reveals your weaknesses to you.  Study the scriptures they give you and allow God’s living Word to marinate through you.  When He has largely completed His work in your life you will come forth as pure gold.

Grace IX - Now Is The Acceptable Time

Visible Grace

Acts 11:19 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.

I have heard some people say that God will protect you in all circumstances.  In truth, there are times when God will give you the wisdom to run and hide.  God CAN protect you in all circumstances but His purpose for your life is as different as there are people in the world.  Only He knows what He chooses for you.  When Stephen declared his vision to the Jews and they chose to stone him to death, it was a defining moment in the church and in Saul, soon to be Apostle Paul’s life.  The church fled Jerusalem and in so doing brought the word of the Messiah away from the center of Judaism and released it to all the world.

They traveled hundreds of miles and still kept the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Jews alone.  It was a troubling mindset of the Jews, even the born again Jews, that Jesus came for the Gentiles alone.  Even in Grecian towns they stayed in the Jewish neighborhoods.  This is something to consider.  Who do you preach to?  Do you stay among your own kind or do you do like scripture says and go into ALL THE WORLD?  If not, perhaps you can ask God to open your eyes to new opportunities and reach a far greater audience.

Acts 11:20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.

Sometimes we are too close to something to see clearly.  The Jews had always been a closed society, they called the other nations ‘dogs’ and worse.  In their mind, God would raise up a great leader and he would slay those other nations.  In God’s mind He would raise up a great deliverer and slay the sin that so easily besets all mankind.  Whenever you believe you have God in a box that defines Him completely, remember, there is no box large enough to contain our God.  Like millions of others throughout the years, when these gentile men and women heard the true Word of God they grabbed hold of it and were saved.

Acts 11:22 Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. 23 Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.

The born again Jewish saints in Jerusalem must have been beside themselves when the first reports of gentile Christians got back to them.  I’m quite sure that more than a few were incensed over this act.  I suppose a few reminded them that Moses had warned them that God would go to a people who were no people to drive the Jews to jealousy (Romans 10:19).  Though that was a bitter pill to swallow, they chose to send Barnabas to travel to Antioch to see what was happening.  The next verse shows how grace can be quite visible.

Scripture says that Barnabas SAW their grace.  What visible manifestation caused him to see the grace of God?  The most apparent would have been the number of gentiles crying out to God for salvation.  No man comes to God unless the Holy Spirit draws them.  The next may well have been seeing them speak in other tongues, the sick being healed and delivered.  God usually performs more miracles among those who feel unworthy and grateful for all they have than among those who feel they have arrived at some perfect state of holiness.

Once he observed the lepers cleansed, the sick healed, new saints speaking in tongues and prophetic words going forth Barnabas was ready to go home and bring his good report.  Even later when he traveled with Paul, Barnabas was more gracious.  It took time for Paul to overcome his Pharisaical upbringing.  When Mark got scared and ran away, Paul would no longer travel with him.  Barnabas took Mark under his wing and worked with him.  Later, Paul saw the change and chose to work with Mark again.  We are all expected to grow.

Acts 11:24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.

I like verse 24.  Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Ghost and full of faith.  He wasn’t so full of himself that he could not see God at work.  I believe that God often reaches out to someone who we are uncomfortable ministering to.  He then has to find someone else to do the work because we are at home feeling uncomfortable.  Barnabas had no such qualms.  He was full of the Holy Ghost and faith and recognized the grace of God when he SAW it.  He chose to lend a hand and many were added to the Lord.  His continued work with Mark caused Mark to became a man of great faith that even Paul recognized.

Grace To Hear Truth

Acts 13:38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: 39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

By grace through faith ye are saved (Ephesians 2:8).  It is the gift of God and that gift was our Lord and Savior dying on the cross for you and being reborn.  The Jews did not kill Jesus.  You did.  Your sins condemned Him to death just as surely as you are reading this right now.  So did mine and everyone else on earth.  The idea that His death was a crime committed by a people or group is ridiculous.  His death was a heroic accomplishment.  He threw Himself on an eternal hand grenade just to save our souls.  The Jews have suffered for 2000 years for failing to recognize their savior.  How much worse will our punishment be if we do not accept His free gift.

I have heard various groups of sinners (homosexuals, drunks, gluttons, child abusers, etc.) claim that the grace of God through Jesus is sufficient to forgive their sins and cleanse them from all unrighteousness.  This is absolutely true.  Jesus came to save all those people and if they will but accept the free gift of God in Christ Jesus they will be saved.  What He did not do was to free them from repentance.  That responsibility came before Christ.  John the Baptist came before Jesus and proclaimed, “Repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand (Matthew 3:1-3).”

Our responsibility PRIOR to salvation is to acknowledge our sins and to repent of them before asking Jesus into our heart.  God…in His grace…will often accept our repentance on credit and save us while we are still in our sin.  What I mean by this is that we are supposed to understand which parts of our lifestyle is a sin and seek God’s forgiveness for that lifestyle before we try to get a ‘golden parachute’ of salvation that will get us to heaven after we kill ourselves with sin.

God is never mocked by man (Galatians 6:7).  You can’t ‘sneak one past Him.’  He sees all and knows all.  The only thing that will set you free is the TRUTH and unlike the fictional Santa Claus, God really does know when you’ve been bad or good.  These days you hear all the time that God is too loving to send anyone to Hell.  God does not wish anyone to die in sin and go to Hell but He respects your right and decisions to do so.  On the day of Judgment He will not allow you to claim ‘temporary insanity’ and send you to purgatory until you straighten up.  There is no such place and God has either written your name in His book or not.  If He has not then you are lost…period.

NOW is the acceptable time (right now while you are thinking about it and He is calling to you), NOW is the day of YOUR salvation, (not after you’ve sinned just a bit more).  You might not have another ten years of His grace to get your act together.  I know someone who died so suddenly that he didn’t even have the time to try and get out of the way.  He certainly did not have time to ask for forgiveness.

Fortunately he was saved.

A well known actor died this week in a horrible car accident.  From all accounts he was a good and gracious man who did wonderful things for many people.  His death was a terrible blow to those who knew him.  He left a young daughter behind who he loved very much.  His death was quick and violent.  It is unlikely that he had time or even thought of accepting Christ as savior during that moment.  Was he saved?  I hope so.  If not, all his good deeds will not matter at all on judgment day (Isaiah 64:6).  Nothing we do will matter unless Christ is in our hearts.  Why are Christians saved?  Because when He knocked we answered and said, “Yes Lord, come into my heart (Revelation 3:20).”

God doesn’t come to you AFTER death and ask for your heart.  He is asking now.  NOW is the acceptable time, not tomorrow.  Tomorrow is not promised to you.

Acts 13:40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets; 41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you (Habakkuk 1:5).

This warning is to all but has a particular understanding to Israel.  The Northern Kingdom of ten tribes who chose to abandon God were utterly ground into the dust by Assyria and destroyed.  There was nothing left.  Had there been no men and women from those tribes who moved South to Judah’s territory, a majority of the twelve tribes would have ceased.  Fortunately those who feared God from every tribe fled to Jerusalem so they could worship the true God.

Today God brings the same warnings to Israel and the rest of the world.  Believe in God or die.  Trust in Him or be destroyed.  Most of Israel today do not believe in the God of their history.  They have no natural resources or particular wealth to draw other nations to them.  There is no reason for China or Russia to one day choose to conquer Israel.  They have no oil reserves or material wealth to speak of, nevertheless these nations WILL come.  God Himself will place hooks on their jaws and draw them to a final conflict (Ezekiel 38).

It has never happened but it will happen.  Once again God warns us and also Israel; NOW is the acceptable time, NOW is the day of your salvation.

Acts 13:42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath.

Paul and Barnabas preached to the Jews until this time.  Paul loved Israel with every fiber of his being.  He was grieved and filled with sorrow at his own ignorance in the past and Israel’s continued ignorance.  He recognized that God was behind this move for their refusal to recognize their King.  They thought they knew who he was, that illegitimate child of Mary, that laughable ‘Son of God.’  In their mocking they sealed their own bondage for two thousand years.  God would go to the Gentiles.  At the same time the Gentiles were drawn by this hope of salvation and assurance.  They rejoiced in Christ Jesus and begged to hear about the Son of God.

Acts 13:43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

At this moment the Jews were still curious.  Many of them and those of other nations who sought the God of Israel followed after Barnabas and Paul.  Persecution was beginning.  The road was becoming more difficult.  In spite of these challenges, men and women who desired the truth besought them to continue to teach and preach in the incomparable grace of God.  When you walk in grace, sensitive people can recognize that grace.  It tells them that no matter how ill received the message might seem, it is the right message.  His grace marks the speaker and gives life to his words.

Acts 13:44 And the next Sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

God’s anointing and God’s grace drew all who would come to hear the truth.  It appeared that the entire city came to hear His Word.  I can well imagine the wonder experienced by the leader of the Synagogue when men and women, Jew and Gentile, all the city arrived to hear the words of life that Paul preached.  He may have ordered the windows be opened and extra stools brought in so even more might hear the message.  How sad that just a short time later the Jews would shut their ears and close their hearts to the truth.  God had found them unworthy for a season because they denied their king (Matthew 23:37, Luke 13:34).  The Holy Spirit ceased His powerful call.  God’s grace had changed its focus to the Gentiles.

Grace To Do Wonders

Acts 14:1 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.

At this time Paul and Barnabas were a marvelous team and traveled throughout the land bringing God’s word to others.  This must have been quite a change for Paul.  As a Pharisee he would have rather never spoken to anyone but the Jewish people.  His experience with Christ has opened up his heart and let him know that Jesus is no respecter of persons.  Because of his understanding of God’s love and grace to ALL who believe, the Jew first and also the Greeks, Paul preached with equal fervor to both.

This great grace was made evident by the number of people who rushed forward to accept Christ as savior.  Sadly, their very success in winning souls stirred up the jealous Jews who still waited for the conquering hero to come and deliver them from the Romans.  They would never accept deliverance from sin and an evil heart.  That was not their purpose and they would not accept it from God.  Their attitude bound them away from God for two thousand years.

Acts 14:2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.

The Jewish people can never say that God did not give them an opportunity to receive their Messiah.  Paul, the writer of three quarters of our New Testament, begged, argued and pleaded with the Jews to study the scriptures to see if Jesus truly was the Messiah.  Sadly, most of them had firmly set their hearts to disbelieve anything Paul or any others had to say.

Growing up in Christ I have gone from one level of ignorance to another slightly less ignorant level.  We all walk in a certain level of ignorance in Christ because it is impossible for us to know Him fully.  That said, it is incumbent upon us to serve Him with full fervor and power with what knowledge we do possess.  The important thing is for us to grow, not from ignorance to revelation but from truth to truth.  Paul fully believed he knew the truth of who Jesus was and what His disciples were.  In his mind they were heretics and liars.  It wasn’t until Jesus apprehended him on the road that he realized the magnitude of his mistake and began his journey into truth.

Truth is knowing something that is and will continue to be correct in all circumstances within the limits of its understanding.  You can be absolutely right about a small truth and be ignorant of a larger truth that is but one idea away.  The beauty of truth is that you can walk from a faith in one truth to a faith in another truth without having or knowing all truths.  We will never have all truth while we live on this earth in these bodies.  One day perhaps, but for now it is our honor and responsibility to grow from faith to faith and truth to truth.

The unbelieving Jews stood fast on what they believed without even considering Paul’s argument for Jesus as Messiah.  It didn’t matter if his arguments were clear, concise and right because their fear and anger refused to allow them to hear it.  They were incapable of hearing what he said so even though it was true, it was a lie to them.  This forced them to deny any request to consider the truth.  If it did not fit in the box they were comfortable with then it had to be rejected.  Fear refused reason and they failed.

Sadly, in their fear and anger they became unbending in their assault upon Christians.  They refused to even acknowledge Paul’s arguments.  God made them deaf to truth.

Acts 14:3 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

In spite of the difficulty they faced, the Christians continued to speak boldly and with power.  How bold are we today?  Paul and Barnabas stayed there for a long period of time in spite of all the attacks.  It’s not like today where there may be a church or synagogue on every corner.  These towns might have only had one church and both Christians and Jews came to debate the law and scripture.  Remember, back then there was only one book and it was the Hebrew scriptures.

It says that signs and wonders were done by their hands.  Muslims are not often won by words and discussions.  What wins them is God moving in power and miracles.  When God heals a sick child by the hand of a Christian it is a powerful experience that is difficult to explain any other way.  Entire families have converted to Christianity because of the miraculous move of God.

Acts 14:4 But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.

This in itself is not a problem.  God told us to preach His word; to go out to the highways and hedges and bring His Word to the nations (Matthew 28:19).  Paul said it best, 1 Corinthians 3:6, “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.”  Your responsibility is not to make someone believe.  Your responsibility is to know God’s Word well; to be a journeyman and not an apprentice.  You must know God’s doctrine and as much as possible, why His doctrine is true.  Once you have planted a seed, God will send others to water and eventually He will reap the harvest.  Those who choose to separate from God’s final truth will eventually whither unless and until they choose to accept His truth.  One day the Jews will come to know Jesus as Messiah.
